Biography

LUIS ÓSCAR HERRERA has been the General Manager of the Central Bank of Chile since March 2024.

He holds a degree in commercial engineering with majors in both Business Administration and Economics from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

From the end of 2023 to February 2024, he was Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and from 2020 to 2022, he served as the Fund’s Alternate Director. Previously, he was Macroeconomic Coordinator at the Ministry of Finance of Chile (2019–2020).

His professional career at the Central Bank began in 1989 as economic analyst and later senior economist until 1995, and held different executive positions in two periods. Between 1996 and 2006, he was Manager of Macroeconomic Programming (currently the Macroeconomic Analysis Department) and Director of the Financial Policy Division. Later, between 2010 and 2014, he was the Director of the Research Division (renamed Monetary Policy Division).

In between periods with the Central Bank, he has been Research Director of insurance conglomerate EuroAmerica. From 2014 to 2019 he held the position of Chief Economist at investment bank BTG Pactual.
