Description
Banks evaluate their loan portfolios based on the characteristics of borrowers, loans, and macroeconomic factors that influence payment behavior and subsequent recovery. Based on this, risk classifications and associated provisions are established to cover expected losses. In the regular monitoring of credit risk by the Central Bank of Chile (BCCh), administrative records of sales (Form 29; IRS) and bank debt (CMF) have mainly been used. This document introduces a new complementary monitoring tool that uses total income and assets from tax balance sheets (Declaración Jurada 1847; IRS). In sectors such as Commerce and Manufacturing, both sales and tax balance sheets similarly differentiate credit risk among companies. Meanwhile, in sectors such as Construction, Financial Services, and Real Estate, balance sheets are a better tool. Given the scope of tax information, this tool will help monitor the financial health of firms in areas such as credit risk, stress testing, access to financing, currency mismatches, and investment by smaller firms or those for which no public information is available.
