One hundred years of statistical information

A contribution by the Central Bank of Chile for researchers, academics, and the general public on its centennial

As part of the commemoration of the Central Bank of Chile’s 100th anniversary, a new section dedicated to the dissemination of historical statistics is being launched. Its purpose is to preserve and make available a collection of long-term statistical series in an accessible format, encouraging their use by researchers, academics, and the general public.

The historical series presented here have been compiled from official sources, institutional documents, and specialized literature. The publication of series not produced by the Central Bank of Chile does not imply institutional responsibility for their content; rather, it reflects recognition of their analytical value as an input for economic and historical research.

This repository is organized into three main groups of information:

1. Historical Balance Sheet Series of the Central Bank of Chile

For the first time, the historical balance sheet series of the Central Bank of Chile are being published in a continuous annual format, covering the period from 1926 to 2024. This compilation makes it possible to observe the evolution of the Bank’s assets, liabilities, and equity over a century of institutional history.

The repository also includes the working paper “Hitos del Banco Central de Chile y su Balance histórico (1925-2025)”, which provides context for the major changes and events that have shaped the Bank’s trajectory.

2. Historical Monetary and Financial Series

This section includes a selection of monetary and financial series dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. Its primary source is the book "Chile 1810-2010. La República en cifras" by Gert Wagner, José Díaz, and Rolf Lüders (2016).

3. Historical Macroeconomic Series

This section also includes annual historical foreign trade statistics covering the period from 1925 to 2024 (for further information, visit the #Blog). In addition, it includes historical series on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 1960 onward, prices, and other variables already available in other sections of the BDE.
