August 2020's monthly index of economic activity, Imacec

According to preliminary information, last August the Imacec drop 11.3% over the same month a year before.  The seasonally-adjusted series increased 2.8% with respect to the previous month and dropped 11.5% in twelve months. The month came with the same number of days as August 2019.

The mining Imacec dropped 3.4%, while the non-mining index dropped 12.2%. The result of the month reflected the effects of the sanitary crisis. In this context, the hardest hit activities were services and construction and, to a lesser extent, manufacturing industry. I services, most salient were the drops in education, transportation, business services and restaurants and hotels. This result was partly offset by increased trade. In seasonally-adjusted terms, and with respect to the previous month, the mining Imacec dropped 1.9% and the non-mining Imacec rose 3.4%.

Considering the challenges that the sanitary crisis has imposed on the gathering of essential data, the Central Bank of Chile has made additional efforts with its data sources to minimize the impact on the quality of statistics. However, it is worth noting that the numbers disclosed on this occasion could be subject to greater revisions than historic figures, which will be published in accordance with the calendar of National Accounts publication and revision available on the Bank's website www.bcentral.cl
