Numismatic Museum

In May 2012, with the creation of its Numismatic Museum, the Central Bank of Chile made available to the public one of the most important public collections of coins and banknotes in the country, which includes part of its valuable numismatic collection, with the aim of promoting knowledge of economic history and contributing to the cultural development of Chile, adding value to the experience of traveling through history from the perspective of the iconographic evolution of coins and banknotes.

In a modern environment that meets current museological standards, about fifteen hundred pieces of high historical and patrimonial value, cover the evolution of the use of money in Chile, from pre-Independence periods to the present day, covering 250 years of our history from a numismatic point of view.

The Museum is located in the main entrance hall of the Bank's building on Agustinas street, with an approximate area of 180 square meters, exhibiting close to 300 national coins minted from 1749 to the present day, more than a thousand specimens of banknotes from all over the world, and around 150 Chilean banknotes from the first ones dating back to the 19th century up to the Bicentennial bills. All the pieces on display were subjected to a rigorous process of evaluation, restoration and conservation, in order to offer the public the best possible experience of their visit to a museum related to the history of money.

The exhibition of these pieces is complemented with interactive proposals in which visitors can appreciate the Museum's collection in high resolution, learn details of the banknotes currently in circulation and get information on the design processes, and create their own banknotes with a multimedia application.
