Abstract: How do threats to central bank independence from politicians affect financial expectations and markets? This paper considers the impacts of Donald Trump's tweets and statements threatening to "fire" Fed chair Jerome Powell. It provides evidence of opposite impacts on short-term policy interest rates on the one hand and long-term interest and inflation rates on the other.
